Led by four seniors, including returning starters Dakota W., Cody W. and Ike M., the Longhorn boys basketball team ended the season with a 5-18 record.

The Longhorn underclassmen contributed to the team this year. Although the Longhorns are losing three starters for next year, they will have junior Jack B. and sophomore Braden S. returning. Braden was the leading scorer for the Longhorns.

Junior Kass C. and sophomore Scott W. saw a good deal of playing time this year and are also returning for next season.

“The season was fun,” Scott W. said. “It didn’t go as well as we thought it would, but I think we grew as a team.”

Cody had the distinction of sealing two dunks this season, one in the game against Yuma, Colorado, and the other in the Haxtun, Colorado, game. The dunks brought the crowd to their feet each time.

“The season went by really fast.” Cody said. “We didn’t do very well, but it was still fun.”

After seventeen years of coaching for three sports, Carl Zuege decided that this was his last year for basketball. Zuege has coached boys basketball for sixteen years, and was the head coach for nine.

“I needed a little more free time for other things,” he said. Then he added, “I think I’ll miss practices more than games. It’s fun to torture the kids a little.”

Chris Bartels will take the head boys basketball position for next season.

“I’m really excited about coaching,” Bartels said. He explained that when he was still in high school, the main reason he wanted to become a teacher was because he knew wanted to be a coach someday.

“Then I went to college,” he explained, “and by the time I graduated, I was excited to be in the classroom teaching kids what they need to know.”
