9th Street Singers receive 1st place at Best of the West and smile for a picture.

Every year the Chase County 9th Street Singers travel to Scottsbluff for the Best of the West Choir Fest contest. This year, the show choir added two new songs: “If You’re Out There” and “In Whatever Time We Have.” The rest of the set included “Everyday People,” “Sky Full Of Stars,” ”Vampires,” and “Jump, Jive, and Wail.”

Ten new singers joined the group this season. Before the performance, Director Randy Hayes said he was ready to see the singers take the stage for their first competition.

After prelims, Chase County was ranked second overall in points, competing with a couple of Denver schools. The 9th Street Singers had 416.5 points out of 450. With placing second, Chase County was off to finals.

“I was so excited to perform again,” senior Noah Griffin said. “I love performing so much!”

Senior Ryelee Christensen also said she was ready to take on the bigger schools in finals.

“There is still work to be done, but I think we need to take this experience and get better for finals,” Ryelee said.

After finals, both Noah and Ryelee said they thought the group’s performance was excellent.

“It felt so good,” Noah said. “It was so fun to see the crowd’s reaction after we threw our vests off into the crowd. The girls loved it.”

After hearing 3rd and 2nd place go to Denver schools the two seniors thought the singers did not place. Then the 1st place announcement was made: Chase County 9th Street Singers!

“I was in disbelief,” Noah said. “We have never won finals before.”

“I was ecstatic,” Ryelee added. “It’s never happened in Chase County history.”

“I cried,” Mr. Hayes said. “The group improved so much from the earlier performance. I was very proud to see the growth of our group in one day.”

The 9th Street Singers also won their division, received gold ratings, and earned Best Choreography.

“It was a very successful day for the 9th Street Singers,” Mr. Hayes said. “I can’t wait for the rest of the season for our group and how much more we will come to grow with each other.”
